New board is hung tight and screwed off properly; patches are feathered into the existing wall.

Tape & three coats
Tape, fill, and skim — sanded between coats to a Level 4 or Level 5 finish.

Prime & inspect
Walls are primed and checked under raking light before paint or paper goes on.
